Sticky Gilia (Aliciella pinnatifida), family Polemoniaceae (Phlox).
The pleasing shape of this plant was what attracted our notice as we were headed towards Rabbit Ears Pass. See the plant slide for a sight that often comes closer to December. See the inset of the foliage slide for a peek at why this plant is named 'sticky'. Our specimen was a pale blue but can also be deeper shade. For a nice example see the excellent website Southwest Colorado Wildflowers - with photographs of that color, here.
Ironically, we had another sighting of these plants just one week later in a very different venue. There were much smaller specimens (tallest 3" high) near the Goliath Natural Area on Mt Evans. Freshly blooming on July 12, 2011 at approximately 11,500'.
Plant location: Photographed going northbound on Hwy 40, near Kremmling Colorado. GPS coordinates: N40°10.456 W106°25.165 - Elevation: 7540'. The date was July 6, 2011. Found in the following United States: CO, KS, NE, NM, UT, WY.
